Twins David & DanielGood morning and a Happy New Year to all. The sun is shining, it’s warming up (a little) and it’s the kind of day that makes a person feel good to be alive! The old year is gone, the New Year has begun. We know not what lies ahead of us, be it joy or sorrow, but we have the assurance of God’s helping hand if we allow Him to guide our lives.

Galen is on his way to Canada for the weekend, Cody & Stephen are making cheese with Rufus’ help now and then. David is making deliveries in the Iowa City area, the girls all have off today. JR and I are in the office, its end of year time. We expect things to be some slower around here this month and next, and actually, it’s rather nice. Hopefully we can catch up on odds & ends that keep getting pushed off.

Yesterday we had a meeting at our house. We had the privilege of having Linda Luke, our broker from Boston here for the day, and also Larry Kline, from Des Moines who is working with us on getting financial things in shape. (Linda’s plans for coming last month didn’t work out when her brother died unexpectantly. Our sympathies to her and the family) We are still in the expansion planning stage, at this point we are trying to figure out how much should we, can we, must we do to be the most efficient all around without breaking any pocket books! Not an easy answer. I made dinner for everyone. Home cured ham, potato stuffing, gravy, barbequed green beans, macaroni salad, cheese and a Boston Crème Pie. There are leftovers, will make an easy supper for tonight. Linda is flying home today. We enjoyed having her. She spent Wednesday night at JR & Crystal’s house. JR grilled steaks for supper, Crystal also had baked potatoes and salad, and I took Apple Goodie and ice cream.

Groundhog Day! Doesn't look like he'll see his shadow in this part of the country, can we hope for an early spring? I doubt if anyone would complain. We have some snow, but not everything covered. There's a white coating, covering up the ugly brown.  There are some flurries right now, doesn't look too threatening. The coldest we've had was 0 degrees. That's cold enough for us.

Today Rufus and David are in Cedar Rapids at the Hy-Vee on Mt. Vernon St. to do a demo for a special event they are having. David went along for lessons, so he can also start doing some demos for people. The vehicles looked awful from driving on snowy roads earlier in the week, we brought them to the plant this morning and Rufus washed both before he left. That's off the list for this afternoon. This evening Rufus and I will go to our church's community center to help with a comfort knotting for the youth. Yesterday afternoon I went with 6 other women and a few girls to set up. I think we have 12 frames, with more tops ready to put in as they finish up. Boys and girls help, heard some times they will have boys underneath to put the needle through from the bottom and someone takes it on the top! It could be interesting. We serve treat afterwards. It gets split amongst 5, my share is 40 ham & cheese sandwiches (we'll heat them there) 4 gallon of drink, 3 bags of chips, and a gallon of fresh fruit.  It means getting to bed later than we normally do on a Saturday night.

Galen was in this morning to take yesterday's cheese out of the hoops. He wants to go to his farm and pull logs up to be cut up for firewood. He had done some earlier. When Rachel was here 2 weeks ago, she helped him cut, split and put it in the basement. He is ready to do something away from the cheese plant.

A snowy morning, it looks nice after two days of snow. There was even plenty of snow to scrape away and keeping it off the sidewalks is a problem when it just keeps on coming. If anyone wants to complain, I say let’s have the snow now, not in April! It is 25* this morning, just a nice temperature. I’ve been looking at gardening books, basically flowers, and dreaming. They take more care but I’d like to try more containers this summer. I have more ideas than I have time, that’s the problem.

The first day of Spring has come and gone, it was cold & windy, certainly not very spring-like. But that’s okay, we’ll take the colder weather now, then come April, nice and warm. (As though we get to pick!) We can at least hope for warmer weather. Actually, I was outside this morning raking yard and picking up twigs/sticks. I wore a coat & gloves, but it was a nice sunny morning. It turned cloudy by noon. Rose called from Wisconsin and had quite a start when I told her what I was doing. They still have lots of snow, she said she it gives her the blues to hear what I’m doing. That’s why I’m glad we don’t live farther north.

Rufus is in Iowa City this weekend, he had a talk at the Hy-Vee on Waterfront last evening at a cheese and wine tasting class. This afternoon he’s at New Pioneer Co-op in Iowa City, this evening at the Brix Restaurant, and tomorrow stopping at the Hy-Vee in Fairfield for a demo. We’ve been keeping him pretty busy on the road lately, and more to come. It’s one of his favorite things to do.  Last week he was in Boston, next week he stays close to home.

David made deliveries in Des Moines yesterday instead of the normal Friday. This afternoon he’s doing a demo at the Hy-Vee in Kirksville. They wanted someone today, and since Rufus was already scheduled, David is taking this one. He’ll most likely get into doing more, he’ll do a good job. We sure value him here as an employee.

Spring is here! But it doesn’t feel like it this morning at a cloudy 40 degrees and windy. After 82 degrees yesterday, this is a let-down. Next thing you know we’ll be complaining about the heat, so we’d best be happy with whatever we have. Uh - Just had a message from Rose in Wisconsin, it’s snowing there, ground is white. Be happy??!!

Rufus is spending the week in Boston, flew there Tuesday. Yesterday and today he’s attending the Whole Foods All Access show. They are in tents, it was nice this morning, balmy. Hopefully the colder weather won’t get there before tonight at least. Friday he’ll be doing a demo at a Starr Market in Chestnut Hill, MA, coming home Saturday.

The month of April has been a busy one, a lot of going away. Rufus and Jr went to Ohio to check out a cheese plant that is struggling April 1st – 3rd. Jr came home the 4th and Rufus stayed in Chicago to demo at Tony’s Finer Foods stores Thursday – Saturday.

Flowers 2013   June 14, 2013

Where has the time gone? The first of the month       came and went - - and no letter yet! It’s cloudy, sprinkled   a little and blue in the west, looks like we’re in for some. A little shower wouldn’t hurt anything, altho I guess some people have hay down. A few weeks ago we had 8 – 9 inches of rain in a week’s time, field work has continued this week again. It’s going to be on the late side for some crops, then again, it depends on the fall, how long it goes till frost.

Our flowers and perennials are doing well this summer. Last year when we started most of them, it was dry and we watered and watered. The majority survived, this year would’ve been a good year to start things. We are starting some. Yesterday I dug out my hostas, thinned them and replanted. Also gave a lot away. We started climbing roses here at the cheese plant, they are starting off well. And the photo, we made mounds on the west side, put a mix of flowers on last year and this is what came back this year. So far it’s mostly bachelors buttons and poppys, blanket flowers are starting and a few others I’m not sure yet what are. It draws lots of attention from customers, they walk over and look, many a photo has been taken. I like when others can also get enjoyment out of them. Flowers are much more fun to do than vegetables. (I know, vegetables should be more important, but - - - )

July 25, 2013

Greetings to everyone near and far. This week the weather has been wonderful, not as hot as the previous week. Also, the inch and 4/10 of rain this past Sunday was wonderful. I was planning to start watering the garden on Monday when the rain came. How glad I was for it! We replanted our green beans, they look nice and we will pick them for the first time this evening.  I am trying stakes at the tomato plants this year, something I haven’t done before. I think I will like it. My sister Rhoda dropped off 4 doz. ears of sweet corn last evening, left over from their farmers market. This morning I did that, using our new “toy” for the first time. We bought a de-silker. It runs by electric, you attach a garden hose, put the husked ear of corn into one end, it rolls through brushes and comes out the other basically silk-free. How fast and easy, works like a charm! I look forward to using it when there is a lot at a time to do. It wasn’t cheap, made of stainless, but we are renting it out to people, also. I saved a few ears for fresh corn-on-the-cob for supper.

Anthony is mowing the yard, the boys have been taking care of that job here at the cheese plant this summer. Several weeks ago, Cody went for bark mulch, then helped me put it on. He sure can sling that shovel better than I can. We didn’t mow yard last week, but the rain made it grow again.

Hello once again. Shame on me, for letting this go so long since my last update. That isn’t supposed to happen - - -

Cooler weather is here, maybe not to stay yet, but it feels like fall is here. After 6 ½ weeks without rain, we were happy to have 7/10    a week ago and a little bit more on Sunday. It is too late for the crops, but the pastures sure could use a good rain.

August was a BUSY month for us. First the ACS in the beginning of the month (see previous letter)The next week Jonathon and        Lydiann Lantz from Lebanon County PA spent 4 days here, learning cheesemaking. They stayed at our house, Lydiann helped with the    work and I felt well-paid. We enjoyed having them. Jr went to Middlefield, OH for 2 days and Galen went to Ontario that weekend.

August 13th & 14th Rufus and I flew to Pennsylvania to Rufus’ aunts funeral. August 19th – 21st we flew to Phoenix, AZ to a Food         Show. It was rather warm, 112 *. We enjoyed it; Arizona is beautiful in its own way. We just didn’t have enough of time to see much     of the area.

Dennis, Rose and girls were here the weekend of Aug. 24th & 25th. We all attended my nephews wedding Sat. Aug. 24th. Rachel was also here, she and Galen were gift receivers, Mark & Mabel Ann were servers. Sat. evening we had Rufus’ brother and nephew and their families for supper, also.

Rufus was in Minneapolis for demos from Aug. 28th – 31st.  Then Sept. 2nd & 3rd he went to Steve & Veronica Baetje in Bloomsdale, MO to help them out a bit.

 October 23, 2013

A cloudy cold-feeling day, 43 degrees. It’s been sprinkling a    bit, almost thought it looked like a few snow flurries? Surely not,  must’ve been bad eye-sight! We haven’t had a killing frost, I  expect it will happen this week with the temperatures they are  predicting. The farmers have had a very nice fall for harvest.

Rufus went to Minneapolis today, he’s scheduled for 6  demos  between this afternoon and Saturday afternoon. He  plans to  be home Saturday evening. Last week he was around  here,  nothing scheduled away from home anywhere. Not that  he  didn’t have things to do, just not away.

The first week of October I went to Wisconsin from Tuesday to Friday to stay with Jane Marie and the 4 children while Randall went to a minister conference in Pennsylvania. I enjoyed the time there, also spent some time with Rose and her 2 girls. Did some sewing, baking, yard mowing, taking care of children, cleaning, cooking. There’s no end of work with 10 month old twins. Rufus was in New York City from Wednesday to Saturday, Galen and Mark had to fend for themselves.

Cold and clear, it’s 10 degrees this afternoon. Winter is here, with a bit of snow to make it white. The young folks like this weather,    that means skating parties and there’s nothing quite like playing games together on the ice. Mark, Cody, Stephen and Leann were         there last evening. I didn’t hear any embarrassing or “funny” stories. Either there weren’t any or I wasn’t supposed to hear it! They had   coffee, hot chocolate and cookies by the fire. I didn’t hear a number, but could be anywhere from 50 to 150 people.

Today we had a larger amount of curds to do again. It has slacked off some for this time of the year. Emma Mae delivered to        Dutchman’s and Rufus took the Bloomfield orders. David and Leann are getting orders ready for delivery for later this week. The boys are   finishing up, there is always lots of washing and scrubbing to do on curd day. The truckles need to be turned before they go. Skating  must’ve been good for them, they were all in a jolly mood!

Orders to ship for gifts have been coming in fairly strong. David & I usually get those ready. So if there is a mistake, you probably get  to blame one of us. I do enjoy it, keep on ordering.

Jr spent two weeks working outside putting a waste water pre-treatment set-up in. It is all underground, still needs the landscaping part finished, but I’m guessing that will wait till spring. It’s too cold now. The pipes aren’t connected as of yet, they hope to by the end of the year. Jr rather enjoyed the change of pace, but we were glad to have him back in the office. Now he is working at purchasing a tank for the whey. As of now, the one they have is too small, it has to be pumped onto the trailer and hauled before it freezes. The connections freeze up, not a fun deal. So yesterday after he tried to open one and got doused, he decided NOW is the time to upgrade!

A Happy New year to all. The sky is white with falling snow, the   temperature is 23 degrees. It sure feels better than the minus      we've been having. It seems as though most everyone has had  “cooler than normal” temperatures. We’ll appreciate the warmer  weather again.

Galen and Rachel’s wedding on January 3rd happened at last.  It was a cold day, but a nice wedding. There were 145 people,  not counting the babies. An appetizer on a small plate was served  first, consisting of 3 carrot sticks, 2 celery sticks, a cherry tomato,  3  homemade crackers, a ball of cream cheese type of cheese and a piece of Prairie breeze cheese. The main menu was homemade crescent rolls, meat balls with gravy, mashed potatoes, peas & carrots & jelled pineapple rings. Dessert was blueberries, cherries and raspberries thickened, and chocolate mousse cake. Rachel made the cakes at home, brought them here frozen, then put the toppings on a couple days before the wedding. She had green leaves made of gummy something, fresh blueberries coated in sugar (made them look frosty), a sprig of red currants and 2 chocolate hearts sticking in up-right. They looked beautiful. (and I forgot to take a picture of them!)The cakes were passed whole, each person cut their own piece. Favors to take home were a little jar of creamed honey (Rachel’s Dad has 600+ beehives) and a small square of homemade soap with a wrapper around saying “Galen & Rachel”    “How beautiful is the day touched with love.” Rachel’s family prepared the meal, doing some in Canada and some here.

February 4, 2014

Hearty winter greetings to our readers. Winter seems to want to hang in there in some form or other. We haven’t had as much snow, more cold weather, but we’re not complaining about less snow than some have had. Sounds like we’re in for some snow today and tonight.

The flu bug is making its rounds. Some people are really getting it hard, others of us slipped by with a mild case and some not at all. Stephen missed one day, Jr and Galen had it on Saturday (a handy day to have it) Jeremy was running a fever last evening when I stopped in. We looked at a book awhile and then he was feeling better, for the time being, at least.

The cheesemakers are short on help. Cody was playing volleyball on Sunday and collided with someone, with both falling. (it was a girl, think he fell for her?) Cody sprained his ankle badly and won’t be at work for ????  Rachel, Galen’s wife is filling in some and Jennifer Flory will come Wed – Fri. this week to help. The boys feel swamped, we have extra milk coming in right now, meaning they have to make 12 batches a week. Yesterday Cody, Anthony & Stephen planned to come at 5, Galen at 10 & Rachel at 2, with Galen & Rachel finishing. Since Cody couldn’t come to pasteurize, they called Galen (at an ungodly hour, he said) he came in at 5 also. They did some figuring, decided to make 4 batches yesterday and get the extra over with for the week. Rachel also came, they all worked till about 9 PM, making 86 blocks, approx. 3450 lbs. of cheese. We brought pizza and ice cream in for them in the evening. They waited till 7 to start this morning, giving them an extra hour. Guess we’ll see how it’s going by next week. They are having to haul milk an extra day, it doesn’t fit on the truck.

March 25, 2014

Spring has sprung! But seemingly on the calendar only. We get touches of spring and then it gets colder again. I suppose in a few months we’ll want to fuss about the heat.

This finds us keeping on just about like usual. Cody was only off work about 1 ½ wks., he was bored. They were glad to have him back. Stephen is taking EMT training, some days he needs to leave earlier. With trading around a bit they are getting by. Last Saturday Mark and Mabel Ann were invited to a wedding, Galen & Rachel hauled milk. They didn’t get their usual Saturday off, or the one before, as they made cheese that Saturday. Hopefully this week they can have off.

Sarah Louise is in Florida, she went with 5 others, all are hearing impaired. They will be gone 12 days. Renee is coming Tuesdays instead of Mondays these 2 weeks so she and Leann can cut cheese instead of Renee and Sarah Louise. We don’t have any huge orders right now, which helps.

David and his family were in Texas the first week of March. David did demos in 3 stores on Friday & Saturday, the rest of the time they had a bit of vacation. It was cool & rather rainy, that was a little disappointing to them, but sounded like they had a good time.

June 26, 2014

Hello to old and new subscribers. I have not forgotten about you, just pushed this to the back of the list – for too long. It’s been 3 month; I’m not sure where I should start.

Rufus has been going places a lot. In the last 3 months he was in Chicago 6 different times, St. Louis twice, Kansas City twice, Middlefield, OH, New York City (2 to 4 day trips) and a few other closer places for  day.

Last week we had workers here from Agri-Service, installing a few things and making adjustments on equipment. Adding on to the building is in the planning. The waste water system they started on last winter is up and running. The neighbor man is here today putting a wall into the one aging room so we can have different temperatures for the Prairie Rose cheese. There seems to be something going on most weeks.

Milk production has slowed down enough so the boys don’t need to make over 10 batches a week anymore, to everyone’s relief. It’s been a drag this winter and up until a couple weeks ago. They put a lot of cheese into the aging rooms the last 6 months. Sales remain strong, we are glad for that.

Good morning from southeast Iowa.

I hope this finds our readers in good health and enjoying the early winter. My, I wasn’t quite ready for all of this. Maybe I never really get ready, it is earlier than most years. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have 6 or 7 ft. of snow and I hope we don’t need to find out.

As I wrote last time in June, 5 months ago, some of our help was quitting. We had 5 leaving, and the crunch was on the rest of us. Cody, David, Anthony, Stephen and Sarah Louise left in 2 ½ months’ time.  Milk production was down over the time they only had 3 cheese makers, thankfully. We have more on board again and things are flowing more smoothly. Galen and Joseph are the only original cheese makers, there are also Jeff, Josh and Lucas. We are pleased with how they pitch in and take responsibility, it makes it easier on Galen. One difference, they are older men, not teenagers. The teenagers as a whole did well, but there is a difference. So the cheese making part is flowing smoothly again. Before long, they will again need to do some triple batch days. They are this week on account of Thanksgiving. They get to have Thanksgiving off and the Saturday after if they triple batch 2 days.

February 3, 2015

Wintry greetings from a beautiful world! Since the groundhog saw his shadow and winter will hang in there, we might as well enjoy it! It does look nice, a snow-covered world. However, in this area, it rained first, and then snowed without freezing in between. That means the ground under the snow is soft, making it messy for farmers and those who have to work outside. At least we are closer to spring than we were.

Austin Trent Musser arrived on January 12, 2015, son of Rufus IV (Jr) & Crystal. He weighed 7 lbs. 3 oz. Brother and sister, Jeremy – 3 and Jessica -2, are very pleased with him. Jessica has to be watched, she’s so quick and gets a little rough. It was an adjustment for her, creating some unpleasant times for all involved. Baby and mother are doing well. Jessica is quite the little girl. I would bring them along to the cheese plant in the mornings, and then take them home for afternoon naps. One morning I told her we want to get her dressed to go to the cheese plant. She said, “No, Jeremy and Jessica stay Grandmas’ house with Grampap, Grandma go cheese plant.” Well, when did she think that up? That is what we did and all were happy. She is only 2 - - -

The snow created some problems for Jay Alan on the milk truck yesterday. Some of the farmers didn’t have their driveways opened very well, he got stuck twice. He didn’t get back till way late, and then had to unload the milk and wash the truck. Hopefully by Wednesday it will be better.

Rebecca & AustinMarch 24, 2015

Hello to our readers from far and near. Summer came early, spoiling us with temperatures in the 60’s, 70’s and even 80* one day, now we went to spring, with much cooler temperatures again. There is a high chance of rain, which we could use. We haven’t had rain for some time, it’s very dusty on the driveways and gravel roads. Besides, we need to be reminded it is almost too early to plant!

We are enjoying the 2 new babies in the family. Rebecca was born on February 16th to Galen & Rachel, weighing 8 lbs. She was named after her great grandma who is still living at 97 years of age. The Grandma is blind, but Galen’s are hoping to make a trip to Canada in the near future so she can at least hold her namesake yet. Rebecca is a good baby. She is petite.  Her cousin Austin (Jr & Crystal) is well-filled out as you can see on the photo. They are exactly 5 weeks apart in age. On the photo they are 9 weeks. old and 4 weeks. old. Austin is a very fussy baby. He seems to have lots of bellyache, cries and cries till his voice is hoarse. Poor baby. His voice is known in church (and not in the choir)by all who regularly attend. He does have some good times. Yesterday Crystal took him for an adjustment to one who gives cranial treatments. He found things out of place, so maybe he will get some relief. We hope. Jeremy and Jessica adore him. I found it amusing when they went to see Rebecca the first time, they held her and liked her, but Austin was THEIR baby, there was a difference.

August 25, 2015

Hello hello, from Milton Creamery! We’ve been having beautiful  weather these days, feeling like fall, crisp and cool. Does it mean an early winter? I won’t borrow trouble on that one, just enjoy what we have now. The beginning of the summer was so wet, the last 4 weeks we haven’t had much rain and the yards are turning brown. The crops are doing well as a whole in this area. Some of the early corn is drying right down.

Here at Milton Creamery production is at its low point. This week they will only have 8 batches of cheese to make. Some of the fellows are glad about that; it gives them more time off to do other things. It is nice to have a break. The curd orders have not slacked off, they are at an all-time high this summer. We can’t make enough in one batch, we need to split it up. We have stores that order every week that we ship curds to, some weeks up to 15 plus boxes. The boys start an hour earlier so it isn’t as late till we finish. There are lots of containers to wash those days making some of them groan a bit on curd day.

Orders continue to keep coming in for which we are grateful. Dwayne fills the wholesale orders and delivers on Fridays. Stacy packs the shipping orders and gets them ready for FedEx. Renee and Mabel Ann cut and package cheese, box up 5# loaves. Emma labels curd bags, labels cheese, cuts labels, just little odd jobs that need doing. Galen, Jeff, Stephen, Joseph & Tony are the cheese makers, Jay Alan hauls milk and does maintenance. Lester takes care of the retail and answers the phone. And I walk around here bossing everyone, keeping them on their toes, some days probably being a pain L and then again some days I actually get things done!  J And we’ll leave it at that, don’t ask anyone else about it!

Note bells on cows in Switzerland

                                                                                      December 2015

   Season’s Greetings,

May the Reason for the Season fill our hearts and minds and remain with us throughout the new year. We have had      many blessings amongst trials and have much to be thankful for. And how much we take for granted!                                  For December,  we are having warm weather, in the 50’s? It doesn’t seem quite right, but hard telling what  may come, we’ll appreciate what goes with it. No bad roads (unless you count the mud on gravel roads J) less heating  bills. In the Midwest you can expect most anything.                                                                                  Milk  production is picking up, the “boys” need to do some triple-batch days. After 8 years Galen decided he needs a change.  He is now working for Reiff construction, concreting, brick laying, quite a switch from cheese making. He enjoys it. His  work is weather related, has some days they can’t work as much. Yesterday he took a few hours off and plowed gardens,  his, ours and Marks. Glad that is finished. I didn’t see it yet, it was dark till I came home last evening. Since he and Mark  both have jobs that are slow over winter, they are planning a new venture, custom calving of beef cows. New fences  have been put up here on the farm, waterers put in. Hopefully it will work out for the effort put in so far.

On the cheese making side, Joseph, Nathan, Jeff, Tony and Stephen are keeping that going. Some days they start early and leave earlier. They seem to like that schedule. Jeff does most of the supply ordering. Joseph is in charge of the SQF. We passed our third-party audit and the SQF audit. SQF stands for Safe Quality Food and allows us to sell to some more stores. There is lots of paper work involved, some of it seems like nonsense and other is good, it makes us do a better job. Mostly, it is getting used to doing it. Jr and Joseph put a lot of effort into it.

Monday April 18, 2016

Spring has arrived by the feel of things. Temperatures in the 70’s during the day and nights in the 40’s & 50’s. We’ve had lots of wind in April, but nothing serious as far as storms for which we are thankful. It is nice to see the green grass, the redbuds blooming, tulips, etc.  I like spring with all the new blooms.

We have had some changes. Jr & Crystal bought a farm, 134 acres 2 ½ miles east of here. They moved on Sat. April 9th. The house is smaller, without a basement. They had to put some things in storage and the rest of the rooms are full. The children really enjoy being able to play outside with lots of room to roam. But a stray dog showed up, wanted to play, and had Jessica on the ground licking her face. That did not go over well; Jr took it along to the home farm on the tractor. So hopefully it won’t bother them again. Jessica says they are going to have chickens, kitties, puppies and later she added rabbits to the list! I’m not sure she was asking her parents about all of those  . . . . . .  Jr will be moving his hog operation there with room to expand. He planted corn on Saturday.

Rufus and I will be moving off the farm to the house in town where Jrs had lived. We will move in May, haven’t set a date as of yet. I started doing some packing, I have lots of sorting to do after living there 23 ½ yrs. Things have a way of accumulating when you have room to store it. We shouldn’t need everything anymore with just the 2 of us. Tomorrow the 3 daughters-in-law, my sister and sister-in-law will help me do some cleaning in the empty house. After shampooing the carpets we can start moving some small things and boxes, with having a moving day for the furniture later. I will be glad to have that behind us. Mark & Mabel Ann will move to our farm later this summer.
